What these prices cover

These are published plan or rental prices, not verified checkout totals. Delivery, service fees, optional insurance and eligible discounts can change the amount you pay.
Sakura's pocket Wi-Fi prices include the displayed long-term discount. SIM and eSIM prices are for one plan, before multi-plan discounts or coupons.
Japan Wireless publishes Business and Premium rental rates. We could not match these to the router on its current product page, so its device and battery specifications may not apply to both rates.
Where a longer plan covers the stay, its duration is shown below the price. Sakura physical SIMs use 15-day plans for a 14-day stay and 31-day plans for a 30-day stay; the full plan price applies. “No exact plan listed” means that duration is not listed among the reviewed options.
Sakura Mobile takes payment in JPY. Its prices in other currencies are reference amounts; your card's exchange rate and fees may differ.

Match the allowance to your usage

Use your phone's recent mobile-data usage as a starting point. The amounts below are planning examples; app usage varies.

Hotspot limits on unlimited eSIMs

Sakura Mobile's unlimited eSIM lists hotspot allowances of 6GB, 13GB, 20GB and 30GB for its 7-, 14-, 21- and 30-day plans. Mobal's unlimited data eSIM lists the same allowances for 7, 14, 21 and 31 days. These are trip allowances, not daily amounts.

Sakura's 3GB/day eSIM allows hotspot use within its data allowance. Its current support guidance lists 200kbps after the daily high-speed allowance is used, with a reset at midnight Japan time. JAPAN & GLOBAL's daily plans list 128kbps after the allowance is used, with a reset every 24 hours.

A router also shares one mobile connection among everyone connected. A maximum device count does not guarantee that every device can stream at once.

What changes when you add more people?

This example uses Sakura Mobile's 3GB/day eSIM and discounted pocket Wi-Fi prices. The data allowances differ, so it shows the price trade-off rather than an equal-data comparison.

eSIM totals are calculated as the displayed price multiplied by the number of travelers, without multi-plan discounts. Router prices exclude unconfirmed additional fees. Verify the selected router's device limit before using the one-router figure for a large group.

At these displayed prices, one router costs less than two of these eSIMs. That can change with a smaller data plan or a qualifying discount. There is no single group size at which pocket Wi-Fi always becomes cheaper.

For six or more travelers, compare by sightseeing group: the cost of the routers you actually need versus an eSIM for each person. Include tablets and laptops in the device count.

Setup, pickup and return

eSIM: check when the clock starts

Your phone must be unlocked and support the provider's eSIM. Use the provider's compatibility guide to check your model. Network names such as docomo and au help with compatibility checks; they don't tell you which plan will be faster on your trip.

Sakura's activation rules differ by plan: its unlimited travel eSIM starts when it first connects to the Japanese network; its 3GB/day travel eSIM starts on installation. Do not install the latter early unless you intend the plan to start. Sakura counts calendar days, with expiry at 23:59 Japan time on the final day.

Sakura’s QR instructions require installation within 48 hours of issuing the code. Full cancellation refunds are available only before issuance. Wait until you are ready to install before making the QR code visible.

JAPAN & GLOBAL lists installation within 90 days of purchase and starting use within 30 days of installation. Follow the instructions for the exact plan you buy.

For Japan Wireless eSIMs, the FAQ gives a 30-day activation deadline from purchase and counts each day as 24 hours from activation. These are eSIM conditions, separate from its router rental dates.

Physical SIM: check the slot and supported bands

Your phone needs to be unlocked, with a physical SIM slot and compatible network bands. Sakura offers 7-, 15-, 21- and 31-day plans for the stays compared above. Arrange pickup or delivery in Japan, then insert the SIM and follow the APN setup instructions.

Sakura's 3GB/day physical SIM supports tethering within the daily allowance and slows to 1Mbps after 3GB, compared with 200kbps on its 3GB/day eSIM. Its unlimited physical SIM includes 6GB, 15GB, 20GB or 30GB of hotspot data on the 7-, 15-, 21- or 31-day plan, respectively, for the whole plan.

Sakura Mobile pocket Wi-Fi: pickup and return

Airport pickup counters are in the arrivals lobby at Narita Terminal 1 South Wing and Terminal 2, Haneda Terminal 3, Kansai Terminal 1, and Fukuoka's International Terminal. Make sure the counter is open when your flight arrives. Other airports may offer pickup at an airport post office.

For standard airport pickup, order by 16:00 Japan time at least one day before pickup. Bring your passport and the emailed booking code or QR code. The recipient's name on the booking must match the name on their passport.

For return, put the complete rental set in the supplied envelope and use a Japanese postbox. Kansai and Fukuoka airport counters also accept returns; other airport counters are pickup-only. At the airport, return it before security. Return it yourself rather than leaving it with hotel or airport staff. Sakura's Shinjuku office accepts returns daily, 10:00–17:00.

Delivery changes and charges

Packages ship within Japan only. A missed pickup or address change after dispatch can cost ¥890 for forwarding or reshipping a data-only order. Sakura's FAQ does not say whether this fee includes tax. The 3GB/day voice-and-data plan requires face-to-face identity verification and cannot be forwarded to a hotel.

Japan Wireless pocket Wi-Fi

Japan Wireless's current product page lists up to eight connected devices and about 8–10 hours of battery life. You may need to recharge during a full day out. Its FAQ asks you to return the rental by postbox by 15:00 on the day after the rental ends.
